It
seems like OutSmart has always been Houston's leading publication, and
since 1994 that is a long time. It
got its start with its 2/15/94 issue, a monthly, and
is still going strong. After the 8/15/96 issue it moved to monthly dating,
and next issue was 10/96. Size has always been about 8"x11",
usually around 100 pages. The Publisher from the beginning has been
Greg Jeu. I was very pleased when in 2000 the paper used was upgraded
to a more slick white style, much better for photographs and scanning.

Sept
2025. This section was in a way a gift to me. I am associated with the
Invisible History
Project. While I have long had in my own Archives every issue, the
task of digitizing them was just too daunting, but I still wished for
this history to be available online. At an IHP conference in 2023, in
Charlotte, the founders mentioned that they had some grant money available
for scanning and asked if I wanted this work done. Of course! So I shipped
five heavy boxes (22 years) to Birmingham. It took two years for it
to be slipped into their workload and now is finally done. I am VERY
pleased for this vital part of our history to be available, and searchable
online.

OutSmart's
coverage of the Houston Pride Celebrations is always excellent, and
scans can be
found in a special section accompanying the Pride Guides. And, here's a Ten-Year Anniversary Publisher Interview |

During
1999 a wonderful year-long feature on Houston history was included,
so I've done special scans of just those sections, easily viewed in a single file...link is at the right. |

The
magazine was oddly (I think) started using the 15th as issue date, quite
ackward for historians, and by the end of 1996 it was remedied by skipping
a September issue and with October starting with 10/1/96. Also note,
unlike for other publications I am not using Volume numbers, as those
used originally were just too erratic, losing its place in Volumes 3
through 7 several times.
