Big Changes ahead...with Volume 9 TWT moves to color, mostly on the covers but often in the ads. And a big change in the binding of the magazine, from being stapled to bound, and with the data on the spine. Unfortunate note, being bound makes scanning harder, ...harder to scan the pages flat. So, if some pages are not perfectly horizontal, blame the binding that fought me. |

And,
AIDS was looming, with January marking the 6th death in Texas. By June
these were no longer "news" and the first obituary appeared
in the back (6/17/83). It became our ritual when we picked up our copy
of the TWT on Friday nights to first go to the back to see if we knew
anyone who had died. Often there were 20 or more.

stories, it wasn't news any longer. On June 17, 1983, TWT began its
now famous Obits section, in the publication's back. It became a "go
to first" whenever we picked it up for many years
