Greater
Montrose Business Guild
Founded
in mid-1982, the Greater Montrose Business Guild was most active
during the 1980s, and had pretty good visibility, tying gay (and non-gay)
businesses and groups together, and getting the attention and cooperation
from Houston City Council, candidates for office, and other city groups.
One of its missions was to function as a Chamber of Commerce, and indeed
was the pre-cursor of the Greater Houston Gay & Lesbian Chamber
of Commerce,
which came later (1996-2008). The
Greater Houston LGBT Chamber of Commerce
was formed in 2016.
The GMBG had a number of prominent members, including Phyllis Frye,
as the group
focused on not just "gay" issues, but community ones. It lost
steam around 1992 and
ended in January 1993.
