1979 March on Washington
for Lesbian & Gay Rights
October 14, 1979
Photo Gallery - Page 7

These photos were borrowed from the Botts Collection, and then digitized. They were taken
by Larry Butler. I need some help in identifying many of the people in them, especially some
of the pre-March rally speakers and performers, which is why I have numbered them.
If you can ID someone, please
email me with the name and photo number. Thanks!

Robin Tyler is a comic/activist and an activist/comic, and was exactly the right person
to emcee the stage at the MOW Rally. She used humor and political rhetoric to call for
the march, and also later Marches. I paired her on this page with Maxine Feldman,
who I give credit for creating the first openly lesbian song, "Angry Athis," and when
Robin Tyler and her comedy partner Patty Harrison heard her they immediately
invlted her to tour with them (1970-1971). At that time being an openly lesbian
performer was brave, and Harrison & Tyler produced Maxine's first recording.
Her song "Amazon Woman" would become a lesbian anthem for decades to come.
In my radio work I have had the pleasure of interviewing both Robin and Maxine;
Robin in August 2001 and both of them on my show for April 2002. Robin released
a number of recordings, seen in her discography.

Maxine Feldman

Maxine died in 2007 and really did not have that long of an active career,
so as photos of her are rare I am showing them in large format.

As a historian I can't express how delighted I was to have
heard Maxine perform "Closet Sale" life at this Rally
